No matter where I go, I never forget to pack these pants

If I were to start a true travel pants fraternity, I know exactly which pair I would pick, and it wouldn’t be jeans. Do not mistake yourself. I love denim. But I would focus on travel, and when it comes to being on the go, my go-to pants are joggers. I love that they’re fashionable like leggings, comfy like sweatshirts, and afterwards perfect for long days in the car or cruising altitude.

While there are many great joggers out there, I think the best pair is Lululemon’s Align High-Rise Jogger. As a former Lululemon employee, I’ve tried many bottoms from the brand, and these are by far the best. And I’m not the only one with this opinion. More than half of the pants’ 4,500 ratings are perfect five stars. A five-star review sums it up nicely: “[I] I love these joggers! I have several pairs and they are the most comfortable and best made joggers I have tried.

At $118 a pair, I consider these pants an investment. I justify the expense by knowing how long they will last. According to lulufanatics.com, a site dedicated to tracking the brand’s latest launches and fan favourites, the Align Jogger, which is a looser version of the Align pants Meghan Markle was spotted in, debuted in 2018. My pair dates back to 2019, and despite significant wear – they’ve traveled with me to dozens of countries and to every continent except Antarctica – they’re still in great shape.

In the past year alone, I’ve worn them while cruising the Galapagos Islands, strolling the streets of Lisbon, and relaxing on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. The pants also accompanied me to South Africa where I wore them everywhere, from the five-star Babylonstoren winery to the bush where I patrolled alongside the famous Black Mambas (the first all-female, all-black anti-poaching unit in the world).

Although the product description says they are “made for yoga”, I have never worn my Align High-Rise Joggers to a yoga class. I did, however, rock them in first class. Last October, I had the privilege of discovering one of Qatar Airways’ exclusive Qsuites during a flight to the Maldives. The airline’s strict dress code states that you must wear business attire if you are in a Qsuite. But, paired with ballet flats and a blouse, I was able to pass these pants off as pants. I didn’t even have a problem getting into the Qatar Airways business lounge at Hamad International Airport (which also has a dress code).

Could I have worn traditional pants instead? Sure. But these joggers are much more comfortable. And I didn’t have to worry about them getting wrinkled if I fell asleep in an awkward position during the flight, because they’re made from Lululemon’s signature Nulu fabric, which the brand describes as “soft as butter.” . (I would take their description one step further and say they are “soft butter whipped butter”.)

The fabric is a blend of nylon and lycra, so the pants are both stretchy and lightweight. After four years of washing them all over the world – and in foreign countries where sometimes I don’t even know if I’m using laundry detergent or fabric softener – mine have definitely pilled a bit. However, no one but me notices it, and that’s normal after so many kilometres. Fortunately, they haven’t diminished either. And on more than one occasion, I made the mistake of putting them in the dryer on high heat. (Directions say machine wash cold and tumble dry low.)

Currently, the Align High-Rise joggers come in eight colors and sizes 0-20. At 5’4″ and around 115 pounds, I find size 4 fits best. Despite being a jogger, these pants are far from baggy. It might be an oxymoron, but I describe them as baggy leggings. Unlike leggings, however, they have front pockets. They’re even big enough to hold my iPhone 12, and the front right pocket has a small inside pocket perfect for storing my keys. The belt also has a hidden pocket (which I use for my credit card).

I have these pants in Dark Olive, but I’m considering buying another pair at Poolside – a gorgeous blue that reminds me of rooftops in Greece (as seen in the 2005 movie, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”.) I’m also tempted to try the cropped version. At $98, it’s also not the kind of purchase I would make every day. But at least I know I could wear them every day, if I wanted to, and they would last for years. What I don’t know, however, is if I could live without them for weeks at a time. In that case, maybe they’re not perfect for my real travel pants fraternity.
