An officer was shot dead at a Suburban Extended Stay hotel in Melbourne on Friday night after a suspect fired at law enforcement, according to the Melbourne Police Department.

The hotel, at 1125 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is close to Melbourne Airport.

After a few calls to 911 from one of the hotel rooms, officers came to the hotel to do a wellness check around 5 p.m.

The chief says the officers were then greeted with gunfire.

“I was sitting there watching TV, getting ready to watch the news, and all of a sudden there was ‘bang, bang’ – the loudest knocks on the door,” said Greg Ripp , a resident of the hotel.

Ripp was on the second floor of the Suburban Extended Stay Hotel when the loud noise led him to find officers thronging the hallway.

“So I stick my head out and say ‘what’s going on?’ and they say “you have to evacuate,” Ripp said.

Shortly before 5pm on Friday, Melbourne police attended one of the hotel rooms for a wellness check.

“There was a dialogue between the officers and the people inside. There was a bit of silence and then the suspects started counting down,” Gillespie said.

The chief said when the suspects got to one they started shooting at police through the door. And then an exchange of gunfire ensued.

An officer was hit.

“In the vest. The officer was taken to a local hospital. The vest did its job. It protected him,” Gillespie said.

“And he’ll probably keep that vest on the wall,” Mayor Paul Alfrey said.

The mayor went to see his friend.

“I served many years in the police department. I know the officer. He’s a good man,” Alfrey said.

Police say two people who were in the hotel room involved in the shooting have surrendered and are in custody.

Criminal charges are expected.

“And they took a girl out in handcuffs and put her in the squad car,” Ripp said.

The chief said the officer who was shot had worked for the department for 26 years.

“Today is his 26th birthday,” Gillespie said. “Thank goodness he’ll be here to see another day.”

The chief said it was an isolated incident.

He also said that two other officers who fired their weapons will be assigned to administrative duties during the investigation.
