As the World Cup has begun, the Dubai-Doha shuttle is in full swing. It is designed to carry thousands of fans to the event, partly due to the shortage of hotels in Qatar. On November 23on the day of writing there are 48 departing flights with over 10,000 seats for sale.
Some 33 services are operated by flydubai and 15 by Qatar Airways. Only six come from Dubai International (the main airport), while 42 come from Dubai Al Maktoum. In Qatar, 15 flights go to Doha Hamad (the main airport), 33 to Doha International, which has reopened to commercial flights for the World Cup. Big numbers, big event.
Dubai-Doha: normally six per day
Analysis of Cirium schedules shows that the previous record, held at the end of 2016 and beginning of 2017, was 39 dailies. It was under completely normal circumstances. In contrast, only six daily flights now normally operate between the two cities; the road has still not recovered from the Qatar blockade which ceased in early 2021.
The six daily services were only available from Dubai International, none from Dubai Al Maktoum. The flights were split equally: three a day by both flydubai and Qatar Airways.
This changed on November 21 (40 daily flights), the day after the start of the World Cup, with 48 flights scheduled over nine different days. Cirium’s schedules show it will peak at 49 per day on December 1 and 2 before gradually reducing to 6 per day from December 23.
